Huntsville Swing Dance Society events happen because multiple people spend many hours for each and every one. Someone books the venue. Someone books the band. Someone posts and maintains the website, facebook group, and the newsletter. Someone picks a theme and themes the dance. Multiple people promote the events including recording radio spots and contacting newspapers. Someone sets up the venue. Someone teaches the lesson. Someone DJs the event or the breaks. Someone works the door. Someone runs odd errands. Someone breaks down after the dance.
All those people started out like you. They took a few lessons. They started coming to dances. They got to know the people in the scene, and they started getting involved.
Here's what we want YOU to do:
When you're ready, we have a great need for event focals. Event focals have the authority and responsibility for successfully executing their event within the restrictions of the bylaws and the board. They have the full support of the various HSDS focals in making their events happen.
If you can't donate, time, you can also donate money. HSDS receives no money at most events. (The door is normally split between the band and the venue.) Yet we still have costs. We have to pay for ice, cups, decorations, equipment, etc. The money you donate helps us do that. Additionally, we use the money to fund major events. Without that added money, we can't hold large events with out of town teachers and performers.
And finally, we need committed board members. We have many board members who are married, getting married, have children, or may have them in the near future. As these board members have additional home responsibilities, we look to new board members to help.
The bylaws lay out multiple jobs board members may have. There is almost certainly one that fits your skills. And, as a board member, you'll have a major role in what direction HSDS goes. Do you want more lessons? Do you want more car pools or workshops? Becoming a board member is the best way to help influence the Huntsville Swing Dance Society!
